China’s interest in Bollywood began decades ago when Raj Kapoor’s classic Awaara’s memorable music and phenomenal actors captivated Chinese audiences. Since then there have been certain movies such as 3 Idiots to Dangal that have not only piqued interest but become blockbusters in Chinese theatres.
Dangal
Based on a true story, Aamir Khan portrays the role of Mahavir Singh Phogat who fulfills his dream of winning a gold medal for his country through his daughters. Not only did the film do well in India, but it also became the highest-earning Bollywood film of all time in China.
Secret Superstar
Secret Superstar was made on a low budget yet the film went on to become one of the biggest hits of 2017. Though the film did well in the Indian market, it surpassed some big names at the box-office in China.
Andhadhun
Andhadhun tells the story of Akash, a piano player pretending to be visually-impaired finds himself amidst a chaotic situation after he witnesses a murder. The story, as well as the power-packed performances, are the highlights of this hit.
Bajrangi Bhaijaan
This Salman Khan starrer had an extremely emotional and charming plot. A young mute girl finds herself lost in India after she misses her train after which a young spirited man took the task of taking her back to Pakistan on himself. The film went on to break big records at the box-office in China grossing over Rs 295.76 crore.
Hindi Medium
The story centers around Raj and Mita Batra, a couple who is ready to go to any lengths after they learn that their background is holding their daughter back from getting admitted into a posh school. The film was an entertainer with a message.
Drishyam
The crime thriller has not only been a big success in three Indian languages, Malayalam, Telugu, and Hindi. But has also been the first Indian film to have been remade in Chinese. The Chinese remake which paralleled the Bollywood version was very well received by its audience.
Padmaavat
It’s easy to say that the elaborate sets and tantalizing costumes alongside the power-packed performance of the film wowed people all around the world. The Hindi epic period drama is based on the epic poem of Rani Padmavati, a Rajput queen known for her beauty.
Mom
The acclaimed film revolves around Sridevi, as a vigilante, who sets out to avenge a crime committed against her step-daughter
2.0
2.0 starring Rajnikanth and Akshay Kumar is the biggest film in the history of Indian cinema. Dubbed and subtitled version of 2.0, it released in China in 10,000 theaters with 56,000 screens, the widest 3D release for any foreign film in history.
Hichki
Rani Mukherjee’s Hicki raked in Rs 100 crore in China, which the film achieved in just 13 days of its release. Titled Teacher with Hiccup, this story tells the tale of the perseverance of a teacher battling Tourette Syndrome, a nervous-system disorder that causes her to react a certain way every time she gets anxious.
Toilet Ek Prem Katha
Another Akshay Kumar blockbuster, Toilet: Ek Prem Katha took the Chinese box office by storm by earning RS 39.85 crores in just two days! The drama-comedy flick achieved parting its social message all while captivating audiences.
