Happy 2019 to us

The year 2018 was nothing less than a roller-costar ride for Bollywood with some massive hits and terrible flops at the same time. Movies like Sanju, Padmavat, Badhai Ho, Stree, Raazi, Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety, Gold, PadMan, Veeray Di Wedding, Andhadhun, Dhadak, Kedarnath made us proud while movies with great expectations like Race 3, Thugs of Hindostan, Zero, Fanney Khan failed to impress. However, 2018 was a decent year for Bolly fans and we are delighted that we have some amazing movies lined up for release in 2019 as well.

Here, we list 10 films to watch out for in the next year!

Manikarnika: The Queen of Jhansi

A film that has been making news ever since it went on floors is Kangana Ranaut’s Manikarnika: The Queen of Jhansi. Manikarnika’s trailer launch was an affair to remember with all fanfare including the paithani nauvaris, naths and the sonorous tutari. Finally, on 25th January Kangana will take us back to the annals of history to witness the real ‘mardani’ we all have been proud of.

Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga

The biggest reason to watch ELKDTAL is the start cast. As a Bollywood fan, I always wanted to see the dynamic father-daughter duo Anil Kapoor and Sonam Kapoor together in a feature film and my wish has been granted. Another reason to watch this film is its topic, for the first time ever India’s mainstream Bollywood film will be about romance between two women. Also, it stars supremely talented Rajkumar Rao and 90s diva Juhi Chawla. The movie is set to release on 1st February.

Gully Boy

Roughly inspired by the life of the Indian rapper Divine, who is known for songs like Meri Gully Main and Roots, the film will bring Alia Bhatt and Ranveer Singh together for the first time on the big screen, we have witnessed their mind-blowing chemistry only yet in the Make My Trip commercials. The movie is directed by the talented Zoya Akhtar, it also stars Kalki Koechlin and is set for release on February 14th.

Kalank

An Abhishek Varman directorial, this big-budget period film will bring back the 90s most loved on-screen couple Sanjay Dutt-Madhuri Dixit together on the big screen. Also, it will have a stardust like never before with Alia Bhatt, Varun Dhawan, Sonakshi Sinha and Aditya Roy Kapur in key roles. Produced by Karan Johar and Sajid Nadiadwala, it will release on April 19.

Bharat

Along with Salman Khan, this Ali Abbas Zafar film stars Tabu, Katrina Kaif, Disha Patani and Sunil Grover in key roles. Priyanka Chopra was initially paired opposite Khan in this film. However, owing to her wedding to American singer Nick Jonas, she walked out on the project days before the shoot began, propelling Khan to cast Katrina Kaif instead. The pictures of the duo are making the rounds on social media and they look simply magical. We can’t wait to see Bharat. However, it is set to release on June 5.

Brahmastra

An Ayan Mukherji film, it is the first installment of a three-part sci-fi series starring the new couple of the B-town, Ranbir Kapoor and Alia Bhatt. Backed by Karan Johar’s Dharma Productions, it also features Amitabh Bachchan, Nagarjuna, Mouni Roy and Dimple Kapadia in pivotal roles. It is slated to release on December 20.

Student of The Year 2

The sequel to Karan Johar’s super-hit 2012 film Student of the Year that launched the acting careers of Alia Bhatt, Varun Dhawan and Siddharth Malhotra, SOTY 2 will also mark the debut of two newcomers – Tara Sutaria and Chunky Pandey’s daughter Ananya Pandey. Tiger Shroff will play the lead and hold us spellbound with his dance moves. The first installment was directed by Karan Johar, but Punit Malhotra will lead the ship this time, it will release on November 23.

Kesari

An upcoming Indian period war drama, Kesari stars Akshay Kumar and Parineeti Chopra and is based on the Battle of Saragarhi. It details the life and the times of Havaldar Ishar Singh who fought hard to earn the respect of his estranged daughter. The shooting for this film began in January this year and the movie is all scheduled to release on 22nd March.

Mental Hai Kya

Helmed by Prakash Kovelamudi, Mental Hai Kya features Kangana Ranaut and Rajkummar Rao. The film is being produced by Ekta Kapoor’s Balaji Motion Pictures and is being touted as a comedy-drama. The stars and the makers shared the first look of the movie just a few months back and honestly, they’re quirkier than the title!
