Swiss film, “And Tomorrow We will be Dead,” promises an entertaining fare

Assistant director turned actor Dara Sandhu features in a European film ‘And Tomorrow We Will Be Dead’ directed by award winning Swiss filmmaker Michael Steiner that opened at the 17th Zurich Film Festival last month. Michael Steiner was the first ever director to be given the honour of opening the festival for the second time as the film is gripping and moving the audiences, while also highlighting the importance of how the political and human crisis in Afghanistan  affects people from all over the world. The film follows the true-life story of Daniela Widmer (Morgane Ferru) and David Och (Sven Schelker), the Swiss couple who were kidnapped and handed over to the Taliban in 2011 while traveling through Pakistan. The story had kept Switzerland on tenterhooks, as for eight months, the couple were held as hostages until they managed to escape by themselves. The world premiere of the film took place in the presence of Swiss President Guy Parmelin and the Mayor of Zurich Corine Mauch amongst other notable film personalities. The film releases in cinemas globally on 28th October.

Dara has lived in several countries and trained in different accent deliveries. No doubt this helped to learn and perfect the Pashto delivery the filmmakers were looking for. Furthermore, he worked in depth with international acting coach Giles Foreman to prepare for the part. Giles Foreman works with notable names such as Tom Hardy amongst others and he ensured that while Dara’s performance had the powerful impact the story required, it was also layered enough to humanize the character and bring forth the complexities of the people stuck in this global Afghan crisis.

Embodying a versatile persona, he has dabbled in writing and direction before pursuing his love for acting and was enlisted as the assistant director on films such as Ae Dil Hai Mushkil (2016) and Secret Superstar (2017). Furthermore, he has authored and published a book titled ‘Value Of A Home’ and is working on his next novel tentatively titled “Mahashakti’ : A political Sci-fi saga based in 2090 that finds India and the books’ protagonist at the helm of a global environmental crisis. Dara has also written a musical web series titled ‘Bombay Rhapsody‘, that is currently being pitched to several OTT platforms, along with a full length Hindi feature film.

An avid traveller and nature lover, Dara has been shooting travel vlogs for his Instagram page from India and abroad. He graduated in M.Phil (Finance) from Cambridge University where he participated in writing, directing and acting in stage plays and theatricals. He has trained in different accent deliveries and voice modulation and also in western jazz and Indian classical dance forms.
