These DIY hair masks promise instant lustre

Sometimes, all you need is a mask to restore your hair to its softest, shiniest version without breaking the bank. These DIY hair masks go beyond your simple coconut oil mask, providing your hair with much-needed nutrition.

Here are our five top hair masks, each one offering a solution for different hair problems.

The extremely dry hair

For those in need of an intense hydration boost, these simple masks made of coconut milk, honey, and olive oil will bounce your dry and possibly damaged hair back to life.

Ingredients: ½ cup of coconut milk, 3 tablespoons honey, and 3 tablespoons olive oil.

Directions: Distribute mask evenly throughout the hair and cover with a shower cap. Leave this on from anywhere between 30 minutes to 2 hours. Rinse out with shampoo but skip the conditioner.

Smoothing mask

Three ingredients are all it takes to get that smooth frizz-free look that rivals even the strongest of your conditioners.

Ingredients: 4 tablespoon apple cider vinegar, 2 tablespoon honey, 2 tablespoon water

Directions: After shampooing, pour the mixture and massage it into your scalp. Leave on for 10-15 minutes before rinsing with cold water.

The detox mask

This simple ginger and lemon mask helps breakdown build-up in the scalp created by hair products.

Ingredients: 2 lemons, a large piece of ginger, mint/basil leaves, and lemon

Directions: Blend lemon, ginger, and mint before straining out the pulp. Depending on how concentrated you want the mixture to be, mix 4 tablespoons to one pint of water and pour over wet hair. Massage the scalp before rinsing.

Deep cleanse mask

This herbal hair mask is much more elaborate than the rest, but works wonders in balancing oil production, helps boost elasticity and improve hair strength.

Ingredients: 4 tablespoons aloe vera, 1 tablespoon fenugreek, 1 tablespoon hibiscus powder, and 1 tablespoon neem powder.

Directions: Mix to form a thick paste. Spread the mixture over your scalp and leave it on for 15 minutes. Rinse with warm water before shampooing.

The pumpkin mask

Pumpkins are loaded with zinc, vitamin c, vitamin A, and potassium making pumpkin perfect for an at-home hair mask for dry scalp.

Ingredients: 1 cup pumpkin puree, 2 tablespoons honey

Directions: Mix honey and pumpkin puree to form a smooth paste. Apply paste from roots to the tips of your hair and cover your head with a shower cap. Leave on for 20 minutes before rinsing with Luke warm water.
