It’s been a while since Sushmita Sen made her last Bollywood big screen outing, 10 years to be exact, which she did in No Problem. And while she did star in the Bengali film Nirbaak (2015), her Hindi film audience have been missing seeing her on screen. But now the star is set to make a comeback with her debut web series Aarya in which she plays the titular role. Interestingly, the show also marks the comeback of Bollywood actor Chandrachur Singh. Directed by Ram Madhvani (of Neerja fame) and co-directed by Sandeep Modi and Vinod Rawat, the show has the two actors play a married couple.
The trailer that dropped earlier today shows Sushmita’s character Aarya being sucked into the world of crime to protect her three children after she finds out her husband’s involvement in illegal drug trade. The show sees Sushmita play a role like she’s never done before and that, says the actress was the draw to return to acting. When we asked Sushmita about the role that seems befitting her return, she said, “Aarya encompasses the totality of Sushmita Sen – the person and the actor. If I had to make a web-show for myself, this would be it and Aarya is even better. Plus in the able hands of Ram, we know that good content will be treated right.”
Talking further about the role that is being said to be an extension of her real self, she added, “It’s a powerfully portrayed role that shows the courage of a human being and not just based on a man or a woman.” Although, the actress admits that the medium required her to tone down the larger-than-life style of acting to make it more intimate, she says that it was a space she really enjoyed and is game for more seasons.
Chandrachur Singh meanwhile, also made an interesting revelation when he shared that Sushmita and he were to come together for a few projects earlier, but they never materialised. “This show has been a gut instinct for me and I’m glad it’s finally brought us together onscreen,” said the actor. The show that will air on Hotstar on June 19, also stars Sikandar Kher and Namit Das in pivotal roles.
