Will John Abraham turn vigilante-superhero for Sanjay Gupta’s Rakshak?

Even as Sanjay Gupta awaits to shoot the last leg of his gangster drama Mumbai Saga starring John Abraham and Emraan Hashmi (delayed due to the pandemic), the filmmaker has started scripting his new film. Taking a break from his gangster-fare, this one will be a vigilante superhero film. Titled Rakshak, the film is adapted from Shamik Dasgupta’s graphic novel ‘Rakshak: A Hero Within Us’, which is a dark tale about one man’s fight against crime and injustice.  The screenplay is being written by Dasgupta, Chetan Naidu and Gupta.

There’s already a strong buzz that John Abraham has been be roped in for the role as the vigilante superhero. As per a report, John was always Gupta’s only choice for the role and given their amazing working equation, there is a strong likelihood too. However, Gupta reacted to these reports with a cryptic tweet saying: “THIS IS NOT TRUE!!! YET…” Check out the tweet here: https://twitter.com/_SanjayGupta/status/1284418423112392704

Earlier Gupta shared the news of beginning the script on Twitter by posting a photo of his laptop showcasing the first page of the Rakshak’s draft, that revealed the names of the screenplay writers. However, he did not reveal the name of the actor playing the lead. “And it begins… for the record on this beautiful morning,” the filmmaker had tweeted (July 15). If the buzz of John playing the lead is true, then the film will be John’s first big screen outing as a superhero, although he did play a vigilante in Satyameva Jayate.

The first in the franchise was the Apoorva Lakhia directed Shootout At Lokhandwala (2007) toplined by Sanjay Dutt, Abhishek Bachchan, Amitabh Bachchan, Vivek Oberoi Suniel Shetty and Tusshar Kapoor among others. The second film Shootout At Wadala (2013) starred John Abraham, Anil Kapoor and Kangana Ranaut and was helmed by Gupta.
