On Urmila Matondkar’s birthday today, we revisit her scariest best films

It’s giving chills, literal chills

At one point, no one was killing it at thriller and supernatural horror films like Urmila Matondkar was. Her innocent face, expressing complex, layered emotions made her the queen of the genre. It’s her birthday today, and what better than ending the evening with one of these stellar films?
It all started with Kaun? (1999), where she teamed up with an exceptional team of Manoj Bajpayee, Ram Gopal Varma and Anurag Kashyap. Interestingly, her character doesn’t have a name in the film, and is only referred to as ‘ma’am’ throughout.
In 2001, she starred as a crazed lover to Fardeen Khan in Pyaar Tune Kya Kiya. She was nominated for a Filmfare award for Best Performance in a negative Role.
Bhoot was a rare Bollywood film in 2003, sans any songs. It was a no-nonsense supernatural horror, with Matondkar playing  possessed wife to Ajay Devgn. As other noteworthy aspects, veteran actress Rekha portrays the an exorcist; The watchman’s murder scene has a cult fan following.
Premiered at the New York Asian Film Festival, Ek Hasina Thi (2004) is easily one of Matondkar’s best works. It’s the story of a woman wronged, and frankly, we don’t know who else could’ve pulled off this audacious character other than Matondkar.
In 2005 released Naina, where Matondkar’s character keeps seeing someone else in her own mirror reflection. We’ll leave you with this!
