7 YEARS OF KEDARNATH: Sara Ali Khan looks back at her Bollywood debut with Sushant Singh Rajput!

Director-Producer duo Abhishek Kapoor and Pragyaa Kapoor celebrate 7 Years of Kedarnath as they reveal, “The love that it continues to receive today is immeasurable”

It’s been 7 years since the deeply-moving film, Kedarnath, was released. Starring the late Sushant Singh Rajput and marking Sara Ali Khan’s debut, the film was directed by Abhishek Kapoor, and produced by Pragyaa Kapoor and Ronnie Screwvala. The director-producer duo as well as Sara reflected on the journey that turned the romantic drama into a lasting favourite. Released in 2018, Kedarnath tells a love story between a Muslim porter and a Hindu pilgrim, set against the backdrop of the 2013 Uttarakhand floods.

For Sara, these seven years since her debut carried a mix of nostalgia, gratitude, and a deep emotional connection to a film that became far more than just her first project. What felt like yesterday in some moments had stretched into a lifetime of growth, learning, and self-discovery in others.

Reflecting on the milestone, Sara had recalled the transformative nature of her journey. “I remember saying that everything I am came from that place,” she had shared, looking back at a time that shaped not just her career but her identity. For Sara, the film was never just a debut — it was an awakening.

“The first time I went to Kedarnath, I wasn’t an actor — I wasn’t even sure of who I was. That journey grounded me, shaped me, and gave me memories for a lifetime.”

She had often expressed how the serenity of the mountains, the spiritual energy of the shrine, and the experience of portraying Mukku left an imprint on her that remained long after the cameras stopped rolling.

Looking back on her debut, she had also conveyed immense gratitude for the film that introduced her to audiences across the country. “Kedarnath gave me my identity. It gave me a sense of purpose, and it connected me to something far bigger than myself. I always hoped the calling would keep coming… and that I would keep returning.”

Seven years later, those words continued to resonate with the same sincerity. Her bond with the film, the mountains, and the moment that began it all remained unchanged — a reminder of where she started and what shaped her along the way.

Celebrating 7 years of Kedarnath, Abhishek Kapoor says, “Kedarnath has always been a very dear creation of mine. It was more than a film; it was a piece of my heart that gave me so much in return. The love that it continues to receive today, whether because of its story, songs or Sushant Singh Rajput and Sara Ali Khan’s dedication – is immeasurable, and I’ll always be glad to have brought this film to life!”

Pragyaa Kapoor says, “Kedarnath has always been a fulfilling journey. Each time I reflect on it, I’m taken back to the mountains and the memories, and the film has given us something much greater in return: unconditional love! Seven years later, the love for Kedarnath still feels very personal, and I believe that is the film’s greatest achievement!”

Kedarnath featured all the elements of being a memorable film! From an inter-faith love story, a real-life tragedy, performances with a striking mix of restraint and aggression as required, and the unforgettable songs – whether Namo Namo, Sweetheart, Qaafirana or Jaan Nisar – made Kedarnath a film that it is today.
