A huge part of Pakistan is underwater and we all can help through these organizations
A brutal monsoon season in Pakistan has led to flooding that, as of Tuesday, covered a third of the South Asian country and killed more than 1,100 people. “As we continue to see more and more extreme weather events around the world, it is outrageous that climate action is being put on the back burner as global emissions of greenhouse gases are still rising, putting all of us—everywhere—in growing danger,” said U.N. Secretary-General António Guterres on Tuesday, adding, “Let’s stop sleepwalking towards the destruction of our planet by climate change Today, it’s Pakistan. Tomorrow, it could be your country.”
More than one million homes have been damaged or destroyed by the flooding, which has taken place due to consistent heavy rains over the past few months. Pakistan’s Flood Forecasting Division warned on Tuesday that a very high level of flooding was likely to continue in the Kabul River over the next 24 hours. The scale of the human suffering currently taking place in Pakistan is unimaginable, but luckily there are some ways those of us in non-affected areas can help. Below, find a list of organizations currently taking donations to help with Pakistan flood relief.
Muslim Hands
This international aid agency and NGO, which was established in 1993, is working in some of the most affected areas of Pakistan—including Baluchistan, Sindh, and South Punjab—to set up medical camps and provide food parcels and emergency relief packs, including food, kitchen utensils, tents, and hygiene kits to address the immediate needs of the victims.
UNICEF
UNICEF has already delivered $1 million worth of lifesaving supplies—including safe drinking water, medical supplies and vaccines, therapeutic food supplies, and hygiene kits for children and families—in Pakistan since the start of the flooding and is working to establish temporary learning centers and psychological care for displaced children in the area.
World Food Program USA
The United Nations World Food Program has been delivering lifesaving emergency food to the millions across Pakistan lacking shelter or sustenance; you can help them in this mission by donating here.
International Rescue Committee
The IRC, which aids people rebuilding their lives after humanitarian crises, is currently working to help as many Pakistani residents as possible find safety and security during the floods (which, unfortunately, are not yet over.)
