The Cannes 2026 Indian celebrities brought couture, a Red Sea honour and a trailer launch to the Croisette. Alia Bhatt led with six looks, Tara Sutaria made her debut and Lokesh Kanagaraj unveiled his first film as an actor. Here are the six moments that mattered.
The Cannes 2026 Indian celebrities story was led by Alia Bhatt, who wore six looks across the festival, ending in a custom Tarun Tahiliani gown. Tara Sutaria made her Cannes debut on 13 May and was honoured at the Red Sea Film Foundation’s Women in Cinema Gala two days later.
Away from the carpet, Lokesh Kanagaraj launched the trailer for DC, his acting debut, and Alia joined Ashutosh Gowariker at the Bharat Pavilion to unveil the poster for India’s 57th international film festival. Some critics felt the films themselves were missing, and we cover that too.

Red carpet details below draw on The Hollywood Reporter India’s Cannes 2026 coverage and The National’s style reports.
1. Tara Sutaria’s debut, and a Red Sea honour
Tara Sutaria arrived on 13 May in a black-and-white midi gown from Helsa, a look inspired by vintage Hollywood glamour and styled by Tanya Ghavri. It was the first of several appearances that made her one of the most talked-about Cannes 2026 Indian celebrities.
On 15 May the Red Sea Film Foundation honoured her at its Women in Cinema Gala at the Hotel du Cap-Eden-Roc. She was the only Indian among six honourees, alongside the Saudi actress Aixa Kay and the Nigerian star Genevieve Nnaji, a reminder of how closely the Jeddah-based foundation now works with Indian talent.
2. Alia Bhatt’s lavender lace for La Vie D’Une Femme
For the screening of La Vie D’Une Femme, Alia chose a floor-length Danielle Frankel gown in pale lavender honeycomb lace and organza, finished with a lace choker. It was one of the most photographed looks among the Cannes 2026 Indian celebrities in the opening week.
At the opening ceremony she wore a peach Tamara Ralph haute couture gown with an Amrapali Jewels necklace set with a 5.53-carat Golconda-type diamond.
3. Alia Bhatt in Tarun Tahiliani
Her sixth look was a sculpted, off-shoulder custom gown by Tarun Tahiliani, with brocade detailing that blended Victorian-style corsetry with Indian drape traditions. After five looks by international names, ending on an Indian designer felt deliberate.
She wore it to a L’Oréal Paris dinner on 13 May honouring Jane Fonda and Gong Li, alongside Eva Longoria and Heidi Klum. As The National’s Cannes style report noted, her lace and diamond necklace came from Malabar Gold and Diamonds, the Kerala-founded jeweller with more than 60 showrooms in the UAE.
4. Alia Bhatt’s sari-inspired ivory look
An ivory ensemble with a sari drape was the most clearly Indian silhouette she wore on the French Riviera. Among the Cannes 2026 Indian celebrities, no one moved as easily between global couture and home-grown design.
She was also the most visible Indian at the festival by some distance. Alongside Ashutosh Gowariker at the Bharat Pavilion, she unveiled the official poster and creative concept for the 57th International Film Festival of India (IFFI).

5. Kalyani Priyadarshan at the Indian Pavilion
The Malayalam star began her Cannes appearances at the Indian Pavilion and kept it minimal: an all-white, sleeveless blazer-style top with structured lapels and a deep V-neckline. In a fortnight of trains and embellishment, the sharp tailoring stood out.
It was her first time at the festival. For one of the newer Cannes 2026 Indian celebrities, it was a confident way to introduce herself to the international press.
6. Lokesh Kanagaraj launches DC
The Leo and Vikram director travelled to Cannes with Arun Matheswaran to launch the trailer for DC, his first full-fledged acting role. Matheswaran directs, and Wamiqa Gabbi plays the female lead.
Of all the Cannes 2026 Indian celebrities, Lokesh made the most practical use of the festival, and launching a Tamil film there was smart positioning. DC went on to open in August and earned about ₹79 crore that month, according to Variety India.
More Cannes 2026 Indian celebrities on the carpet
Aditi Rao Hydari, a L’Oréal ambassador, wore a neon architectural creation by the Lebanese designer Tony Ward. Huma Qureshi chose a sequinned black gown by the Saudi designer Eman Alajlan for the premiere of Hope, giving Arab designers a notable place in India’s Cannes wardrobe.
Rida Tharana made her debut in a strapless Nikhil Gajare gown, and Urvashi Rautela wore JoliPoli Couture. ETV Bharat also reported that Aishwarya Rai Bachchan returned as a global beauty brand ambassador, a role she has held at the festival for more than two decades.
Beyond the Cannes 2026 Indian celebrities: where were the films?
Glamour aside, ETV Bharat argued that India missed the cinema conversation again. No Indian title made the Official Selection in any major category, and coverage of the Cannes 2026 Indian celebrities focused on carpets, pavilions and trailers.
There were bright spots. Payal Kapadia, whose All We Imagine as Light won the Grand Prix in 2024, headed the Critics’ Week jury. A restored print of John Abraham’s 1986 classic Amma Ariyan played in Cannes Classics, and FTII student Mehar Malhotra’s short was selected for La Cinef.
At the Marché du Film, Indian titles such as Chidambaram’s Balan The Boy were shown to buyers. That is where the business happens, even if it rarely makes headlines.
