Asha Bhosle celebrated her 86th birthday with fans and media in Dubai at her restaurant, Asha’s, at Wafi Mall on the evening of Saturday, September 7. She cut her birthday cake and treated everyone to a five-course menu, that also featured three of Bhosle’s favourite dishes. The music throughout the evening focused on hits from the 70s and 80s by Asha Bhosle, R.D. Burman, Kishore Kumar, Mohammed Rafi and Lata Mangeshkar. Neelam Punjabi caught up with her!
You are a fighter, what is your biggest strength?
Self-confidence is my biggest strength. I believe that if I trust myself and I haven’t betrayed anyone there is nothing to fear. I will always stand strong and I will always keep singing. You know my age (smiles) People say you should not talk about your age (nazar lagti hai, I don’t believe in that). The strength that comes from within, self-confidence and positive thinking is something that takes you a long way. There will be good and bad days in your life but one should never give up. “Tu kya leke aaya hai, aur tu kya leke jayega?”. We have to face the reality with smile and I make sure that I greet everyone Good Morning and this makes us all have a happy start. Everyone should make an effort to make others smile. When I was a 15-16 years old my Masterji Premchand Prakash said you should say Namaste (namaskar) to the guards also and if they don’t greet you back, think as if you said namaste God, the Merciful.
If you were not a singer what would you have been?
I would be a Chef (laughs). I love to cook and I have a passion of cooking. The passion for cooking always makes the food taste good and it also depends for who you are cooking, always keep in mind for who are cooking as everyone has a different taste and eating habits. I like to sing along while I am cooking. I find comfort in creating good food and happiness in watching my guests appreciate it.
Ashaji also sang her song Khatouba from Alibaba Aur 40 Chor for Dubai and its people. (Checkout Filmfare Middle East Instagram handle to watch her sing)
