Directed by Vidhu Vinod Chopra, with an RD Burman soundtrack that continues to echo through generations, the film had remarkable performances by Anil Kapoor, Jackie Shroff, Manisha Koirala, Anupam Kher and Danny Denzongpa

A film that reshaped the course of Indian cinema in the 90s and restored the spotlight on RD Burman’s extraordinary talent, 1942: A Love Story – widely regarded as one of the most iconic love stories — returns to the big screen on January 16, 2026. Directed by Vidhu Vinod Chopra and now restored in 8K with remastered 5.1 surround sound, the film is a classic love story set against the backdrop of the nationalist movement, a lush tapestry of romance and rebellion, deeply moving, and beneath its nostalgic setup lies an earnest heart beating in perfect rhythm with its music.

The restoration — meticulously executed in collaboration with Prasad Labs, India and L’Immagine Ritrovata in Bologna, Italy, one of the world’s leading film-preservation laboratories — brings renewed visual depth and sonic richness to the much loved 1994 classic, allowing its emotional and artistic beauty to shine brighter than ever. Starring Anil Kapoor, Manisha Koirala, Jackie Shroff, and Anupam Kher, 1942: A Love Story remains a landmark of Hindi cinema, celebrated for its tender portrayal of love against the backdrop of India’s freedom movement, its stirring performances, and its enduring cultural impact. The re-release also serves as a tribute to the genius of RD Burman, whose music not just became the soul of the film but also brought melodies back to Indian cinema in the 90s. From “Ek Ladki Ko Dekha” to “Kuch Na Kaho” every song in the film is a masterpiece and continues to be cherished across generations.

Returning to the big screen three decades after its original 1994 release, the film offers a rare opportunity for the generation that grew up with 1942: A Love Story to relive its magic — and for a new generation to discover a masterpiece crafted by some of the most exceptional talents of its time, many of whom continue to create inspiring work even today. The film earned multiple Filmfare nominations and won several awards, including a posthumous Best Music Director honour for RD Burman.

Speaking about the restored and remastered film, director Vidhu Vinod Chopra shared, “One very important thing I want to say, for the first time, the audience will see the film the way it was meant to be seen. Because when the film was released, India was not still equipped with a proper Dolby surround sound. Even the colour grading had limitations. This was the first film in India that was made in Dolby — and Dolby was brought to India by me. I had mixed the film in London. They told us that Dolby can even play in a mono theatre. We brought it back, but no cinema hall was ready to play Dolby. Can you imagine that? We laid the special imported cables and installed surround sound speakers in Metro. That’s how the film first played properly in Dolby. Then I went to Jaipur. In Jaipur, the lines of Jaggu were not audible, the bomb explosions were not audible from wherever they were happening — because Dolby sound was still running in mono. But now one can truly experience the sound as it was meant to be and see the colour pallet, as it was initially visualized by the Cinematographer and the Director”

“The audiences can go as they are, and they are going to love the film — lovely songs, great actors, and Vinod Chopra directed it. What else do you need?”
– Jackie Shroff

Anupam Kher said, “The songs are eternal. It’s unbelievable how RD Burman gave music without any techno music. I think that’s fantastic. As far as love is concerned, love will always be eternal. That’s the beauty. It can be called by different names, but the definition of love will remain the same.”

1942: A Love Story is regarded as one of Hindi cinema’s most enduring romantic dramas, celebrated for its award-winning music, poetic story-telling, and unforgettable performances. The film will have an all-India re-release in select theatres from January 16, 2026 by PVR INOX!
