18 years of Devdas!

July 12, 2020 marked 18 years of Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s epic romance drama Devdas, and we haven’t forgotten a single scene, song, or expression from the film.

Devdas starring Shah Rukh Khan, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, and Madhuri Dixit Nene in lead roles has carved its name alongside the classics. The film’s grandiose is captured in its riveting storyline, captivating sets, elegant dances, and melodies.

A decade and eight years later, the late Saroj Khan’s dance set on Dola Re and picturised beautifully on the leading ladies – Madhuri and Aishwarya, Shreya Ghoshal’s isshh in Bairi Piya seem as fresh as yesterday. And who can forget Madhuri Dixit’s bewitching courtesan dance on Maar Dala?

Shah Rukh Khan’s role as the heart-broken alcoholic Devdas set out to make Devdas a euphemism for all broken hearts in modern-day. Bhansali captures love, loss, pain, and compromise beautifully, leaving no loose ends.

Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s tragic love story won in various categories at the 48th Filmfare Awards, including the Best Film, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actress, Best Choreography, Best Art Director to name a few. All the three leads of the film went on to win big at the 50th National Film Awards.

Devdas inspired by Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay’s novel of the same name officially marked India’s entry into the Oscars and Aishwarya’s into Cannes.
