END OF AN ERA: Manoj Kumar passes away, leaving behind a timeless legacy!

Indian cinema has lost one of its most iconic figures, Manoj Kumar, who passed away on April 4, 2025, at the age of 87 due to age-related health issues. Known as Bharat Kumar for his unforgettable portrayal of patriotic characters, Kumar was a celebrated actor, director, and filmmaker whose work resonated deeply with audiences across generations.

Born Harikrishna Giri Goswami in Abbottabad (now in Pakistan) in 1937, Manoj Kumar’s family moved to India during Partition. Inspired by Dilip Kumar, he adopted his screen name and began his film career with Fashion (1957). He rose to fame with hits like Hariyali Aur Rasta and Woh Kaun Thi?, but it was his role as Bhagat Singh in Shaheed (1965) that established him as a patriot on screen. His directorial debut, Upkar (1967), inspired by Lal Bahadur Shastri’s slogan “Jai Jawan Jai Kisan,” became a landmark film in Indian cinema.

Over the years, Kumar delivered classics like Purab Aur Paschim, Roti Kapda Aur Makaan, and Kranti, which explored themes of nationalism, social justice, and India’s cultural heritage. His contributions earned him numerous accolades, including the Padma Shri (1992) and the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award (2015).

Tributes poured in from across the nation, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi calling him “an icon of Indian cinema” whose work “ignited a sense of national pride.” Fans and colleagues remembered him as a cinematic visionary who celebrated India’s spirit through his art. His funeral will take place in Mumbai after public tributes at his residence.

Manoj Kumar leaves behind a body of work that not only entertained but also instilled national pride. As the nation mourns, his films continue to serve as a timeless tribute to his love for India.
