1. Mirzapur The Movie is an interquel, not a sequel

The series premiered on Amazon Prime Video in November 2018 and ran for three seasons, with the third arriving in July 2024. According to the series’ Wikipedia page, it became the most popular streaming show in India after Sacred Games.

Mirzapur The Movie goes back to the season one years, when the Tripathi family’s grip on the town was at its peak and the Pandit brothers were still rising. That choice is what makes the return of Munna and Bablu possible, since both characters were killed off in the series.

Newcomers can follow it, but the film rewards anyone who has watched the first season. Expect plenty of callbacks to the show’s best known lines and rivalries.

2. The series team made the jump to cinema

Gurmmeet Singh, who directed episodes across all three seasons, makes his feature debut. Puneet Krishna, who co-created and co-wrote the show with Karan Anshuman, wrote the screenplay.

Ritesh Sidhwani and Farhan Akhtar produced it through Excel Entertainment, with Kassim Jagmagia and Vishal Ramchandani as co-producers, as Variety India reported when the date was announced. Amazon MGM Studios co-produced, and Prime Video included the film in its March 2026 slate reveal.

3. The cast brings the Tripathis back together

The core of the show is back, led by Pankaj Tripathi as Akhandanand “Kaleen” Tripathi, Ali Fazal as Govind “Guddu” Pandit and Divyenndu as Phoolchand “Munna” Tripathi. Ravi Kishan joins as Babban Yadav, and Abhishek Banerjee returns as Compounder.

Rasika Dugal, Shweta Tripathi, Shriya Pilgaonkar, Harshita Gaur, Sheeba Chaddha, Rajesh Tailang and Kulbhushan Kharbanda complete the familiar faces. New additions include Mohit Malik, Sonal Chauhan and Anjum Sharma.

Munna was the headline draw for many fans. Divyenndu’s spoilt, dangerous heir was one of the show’s most quoted characters, and seeing him again was a big part of the film’s pull.

4. Jitendra Kumar replaced Vikrant Massey as Bablu

Vikrant Massey played Bablu, the clever younger Pandit brother, until the character was killed in the season one finale. For the film, the role went to Jitendra Kumar, best known for Panchayat and Kota Factory.

Fans debated the recast when it was announced in September 2025. Kumar’s gentler screen persona suits a character who was always the brains of the pair rather than the muscle.

5. It was shot in Mumbai, Varanasi and Rajasthan

The film began with a muhurat puja at Excel’s Mumbai office on 14 August 2025 and a script reading the next day. Filming started in Mumbai in September, moved to Varanasi in October, then went on to Jaisalmer and Jodhpur.

A further Rajasthan schedule in December 2025 covered Ali Fazal’s portions, and the shoot wrapped in January 2026. The desert locations give the film a wider, more cinematic look than the series.

The music marks a change too. John Stewart Eduri composed the score, and the soundtrack is the first released on Excel Records, including “Vaaroon Forever”, a new version of the series song with vocals from Shreya Ghoshal.

6. Mirzapur The Movie reviews were mostly positive

Critics were largely warm. Bollywood Hungama, Hindustan Times and Rediff each gave four stars, Firstpost and Times Now gave 3.5, and India Today, The Times of India and The Indian Express gave three. NDTV was cooler at 2.5, and Rotten Tomatoes shows 73% positive from 15 reviews.

Praise went to the cast, the action, the background score and the Rajasthan locations. The main complaints were the 197-minute runtime and uneven pacing.

The CBFC passed it with an A certificate on 29 August 2026 after muting some profanity and trimming intimate scenes. No violent scenes were cut, so expect the show’s trademark brutality.

7. Mirzapur The Movie box office

The film opened to ₹24.47 crore nett in India and passed ₹100 crore nett on 7 September, its fourth day. According to Wikipedia’s compilation of trade figures, it has grossed ₹248.37 crore worldwide, with ₹206.79 crore from India and ₹41.58 crore overseas.

Trade estimates put the budget at about ₹80 to ₹90 crore, so it is a clear success. Wikipedia lists it as the third highest-grossing Hindi film of 2026.

Where to watch Mirzapur The Movie

Amazon MGM Studios co-produced the film, so Prime Video is the natural streaming home after its cinema run, but no date had been confirmed at the time of writing. All three seasons of the series are on Prime Video now, which makes this a good moment to catch up on season one.

For viewers in the UAE, check local cinema listings and the age classification before booking. This is a violent crime thriller with strong language, and it was certified for adults only in India.
