The fairytale weddings of B-town!

It’s both emotional and overwhelming for DeepVeer fans across the world as Bollywood’s beloved power couple Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh get ready to tie the knot. In just a few hours from now, Deepika and Ranveer will be officially married and fans can hardly contain their excitement. The couple kick started their wedding celebrations with a grand sangeet and mehendi ceremony on Tuesday. As per reports, while Shubha Mudgal was performing a thumri Deepika Padukone got all emotional and was in tears. When she broke down, Ranveer, who could understand her emotional state, walked up to her and hugged her tight and consoled his lady love. He ensured she was smiling again with all his crazy love antics.

  • Sunil Dutt – Nargis (11th March 1958)

Sunil Dutt, had met his long-time crush Nargis during the mid-1950s on the sets of Do Bigha Zamin for the first time. Sunil fell in love with her as soon as he saw her, but never did he let her know until he established himself in the industry. It was during Mehboob’s Khan’s film, Mother India, that both came closer. Dutt was very happy to learn, he would be working with the love of his life. They expressed their love for each other on the sets of Mother India. Nargis, could not resist to show herself falling in love and expressing the same to the actor. Sunil and Nargis got married in 1958 and had announced this news to their close friends within the industry. It came as a shock to many but their love story still remains our favorite.

 

  • Dilip Kumar – Saira Banu (11th October, 1966)

It was a fairytale romance for ‘king of tragedy’ Dilip Kumar (aka Yusuf Khan) and for Bollywood diva Saira Banu. The former actress recalls and confesses, she had fallen in love with Dilip right from the age of 12. After Saira got a chance to see Dilip, her first glimpse, she remembers that moment very fondly and as clearly as ever. She said in an interview, “When he smiled at me and remarked that I was a pretty girl, I could feel my whole being taking wing and flying rapturously. I knew somewhere deep within me that I was going to be his wife”. Later in 1966, they got married when the gorgeous Saira was only 22 and Dilip Kumar was 44 and it’s still going strong making us believe in the constitution of marriage.

 

  • Sharmila Tagore – Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi (27th December, 1969)

They first met at an after-match party in Delhi in the year 1965 – Tiger was in the city with his cricket team while Sharmila came to watch his match. As confessed by both celebrities in an interview – Tiger did not know much about Sharmila’s films and nor did she know much about cricket. Although, we can say, something clicked and what followed was a headline-making relationship culminating into a marriage. After dating for few years, Sharmila and Tiger married in 1969.

 

  • Rajesh Khanna – Dimple Kapadia (March 1973)

Rajesh Khanna was India’s first superstar, which brought his life and affairs in limelight. It was his marriage to Dimple Kapadia, the then budding star which made it in the headlines. During the peak of Rajesh’s career, he happened to notice Dimple Kapadia during her first film Bobby. The actor did not waste any time and had proposed to Dimple despite her age. She was overjoyed by the proposal by her favorite movie star and happily accepted it. Their wedding was heavily covered by media houses. After all, it was a wedding of one of the finest actors in our industry. Dimple was only 16 years old during her marriage, and Rajesh was 15 years older than her. Their marriage was celebrated with great joy in March, 1973. Dimple Kapadia once said, “The biggest high for me was to marry Rajesh Khanna. That was high and I don’t think my success was as much of a high as getting married to this superstar. I used to be a big fan of his, it was dream come true”. The star couple held their grand marriage reception at Hotel Horizon Juhu, in Mumbai.

 

  • Amitabh Bachchan – Jaya Bachchan (June 3, 1973)

In early 1970 was the time, when India’s most celebrated couple had a glance of each other. Jaya Bachchan saw Amitabh at Pune Film Institute. Jaya, appeared on a glossy cover of a magazine which worked as a trigger for their love story. As soon as Amitabh saw it, he took a full glance at Jaya Bhaduri. You can call it serendipity as Jaya matched all of those features, Amitabh had once dreamt of – a perfect balance of traditional and modern values. Moreover, Amitabh could not get over Jaya’s charmful eyes. This rang a sudden love bell in Amitabh’s heart. Amitabh Bachchan, proposed to Jaya for marriage and it was an instant yes from her. In 1973, June 03rd they tied their knot and same day the couple left for London. Their wedding was low key with few friends and family members attending.

 

  • Dharmendra – Hema Malini (21st August, 1979)

Nothing less than a sizzling love story between two drop-dead gorgeous looks come together. In the year 1970, the yesteryear superstars, Hema Malini and Dharmendra, fell in love with each other on the sets of Tum Haseen Main Jawan. Dharmendra and Hema, had a quiet, traditional Tamil wedding which was what the couple had always wanted to do. It took place at Hema’s brother’s home. Hema Malini was Indian cinema’s ‘Dream girl’, and Dharmendra was the original He-Man of Bollywood.

 

  • Rishi Kapoor – Neetu Singh (22nd January, 1980)

Rishi Kapoor’s sister got them engaged in a hush hush ceremony. Rishi Kapoor had gone to Delhi to attend a friend’s wedding and his sister had secretly invited both the families for the event. Both the families knew about the budding relationship between the couple and decided to get them engaged. Rishi Kapoor did not even have a ring to give to Neetu, so he took his sister’s ring and gave it to her. Meanwhile, the director of Rishi Kapoor’s film Jhootha Kahin Ka, who was also a part of this secret ceremony, gave his ring to Neetu to give it to Rishi Kapoor.

 

  • Madhuri Dixit – Shriram Nene (17th October, 1999)

While she made many hearts skip a beat with her smile, dance and charm, actress Madhuri Dixit lost her own heart to this simple Brahmin boy, across seven seas. Madhuri married Dr. Sriram Nene at a quite ceremony in California on October 17 1999. It was a hush-hush affair which was attended by only close friends and family. It is said that Dr Nene is quite close to Madhuri’s brother Ajit Dixit, who also lives in the US. Ajit only requested Madhuri to meet Dr Nene, and rest they say is history. The two met, liked each other and starting meeting more often to know more about each other. After a brief courtship period of 3 months, Madhuri and Sriram entered the wedlock at Madhuri’s brother’s place in the US. It’s been over 15 years now, and the happily married couple is still going strong.

 

  • Abhishek Bachchan – Aishwarya Rai (20th April, 2007)

It was after the premiere of the film, Guru, in Toronto, when Abhishek proposed to Aishwarya in New York, and she immediately accepted his proposal. Abhishek said in one of his interviews, “I was filming in New York for a movie. And, I used to stand on the balcony of my hotel room and wish that, ‘One day, wouldn’t it be nice if I was together with her, married. Years later, we were there for the premiere of Guru. After the premiere, we were back in the hotel. So, I took her to the very same balcony, and I asked her to marry me.” After the formal proposal, the two flew back to Mumbai and got engaged on January 14, 2007, at the Bachchan’s residence. The couple finally got married on April 20, 2007. The baarat started from one of the residences of the Bachchans, Jalsa, to their other house, Prateeksha.

 

  • Kareena Kapoor – Saif Ali Khan (16th October, 2012)

Despite constantly being in the spotlight, Kareena and Saif kept their wedding very private. After living together for five years, the couple sealed the deal with a week-long celebration including a sangeet at Kareena’s Bandra home. The duo tied the knot on October 16, 2012.
