Toxic postponed: Yash’s gangster epic left its 19 March 2026 date, then moved twice more before it finally opened in August. Here are the three reasons behind the delays, and why the Gulf sat at the centre of the story.
Toxic postponed was the headline on 3 March, when the makers of Toxic: A Fairy Tale for Grown-Ups pulled the film from its 19 March release because of escalating instability in the Middle East, one of its key overseas markets. They announced a new date of 4 June 2026.
That date was later dropped too, and the film finally opened worldwide on 26 August 2026, timed for Onam. Here is why it kept moving and what happened when it arrived.

Toxic postponed: what the makers said
KVN Productions and Monster Mind Creations said they had made Toxic “with the vision to create cinema for a global audience”. According to WION’s report on the delay, they added that “the current uncertainty, especially in the Middle East” affected their goal of reaching the widest possible audience.
The producers described the move as “difficult but carefully considered”, taken in the interest of partners and audiences. With Toxic postponed, the trailer launch planned for 8 March in Bengaluru was deferred, and the first single, “Tabaahi”, was held back from its planned 2 March debut.
1. The Middle East crisis hit a key market
The timing explains the decision. From 28 February, the conflict involving Iran disrupted flights and public life across the Gulf, including in the UAE. WION reported that advisories from Phars Film, the film’s distribution partner for the region, prompted the call.
A film planning a simultaneous worldwide release could not count on Gulf cinemas, which are among the most important overseas markets for South Indian cinema. Phars Film had reportedly paid about ₹105 crore for the overseas rights to the Indian-language versions, so the stakes were high on both sides.
2. A clash with Dhurandhar: The Revenge
There was a second factor. Aditya Dhar’s Dhurandhar: The Revenge, starring Ranveer Singh, was also due on 19 March, and the film’s Wikipedia entry lists avoiding that clash as part of the decision.
It looks like a wise call in hindsight. Dhurandhar: The Revenge went on to break Indian opening records and became the highest-grossing Hindi film ever in India. With Toxic postponed, Yash avoided going head to head with the biggest Hindi release of the year.
3. Global distributors wanted one date
The June date did not hold either. On 29 April, KVN Productions said overseas distributors had responded strongly to Yash’s presentation at CinemaCon in Las Vegas, and the team wanted a globally aligned release, The Cinema Post reported.
Yash said in his own statement: “Toxic is complete, and we are currently aligning global distribution and partnerships.” Lionsgate later handled the English version worldwide.
The scale of the project made a clean global launch essential. Filming ran from August 2024 to October 2025 across Bengaluru, Mumbai, Goa and other locations, with more than 1,000 crew members and 450 actors, and John Wick stunt veteran JJ Perry choreographed many of the action sequences.
Toxic postponed three times: every release date
- 10 April 2025. The original date, dropped because of shooting delays and production issues.
- 19 March 2026. Postponed on 3 March 2026 over the Middle East situation and the Dhurandhar: The Revengeclash.
- 4 June 2026. Dropped on 29 April to align global distribution after CinemaCon.
- 26 August 2026. The final worldwide release, timed for Onam, in standard, IMAX, Dolby Cinema, 4DX and EPIQ formats. The English version opened in India on 4 September with a 176-minute cut.
What happened when Toxic finally released
It did not end well. Toxic opened to about ₹140.75 crore gross worldwide on day one and went on to gross about ₹337.80 crore worldwide, according to Wikipedia’s compilation. That made it the third highest-grossing Indian film of 2026 at the time, but it was still a box-office bomb against an estimated budget of ₹500 crore to ₹1,000 crore.
In India, the film earned ₹239.30 crore nett, and more than half of that, ₹130.29 crore, came from the Hindi version. It opened on a reported 12,000 screens worldwide.
Critics were largely negative about the 194-minute film. On Rotten Tomatoes, only 24% of 21 counted reviews were positive, although Yash, Kiara Advani, the cinematography and the action drew some praise.
What the Toxic postponed saga tells us
The Gulf is not a side market for Indian cinema. Yash’s KGF films built a large following in the region among Kannada, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam and Hindi audiences, and Toxic was planned as an even bigger international play, shot in English as well as Kannada.
When that market was disrupted, a pan-Indian film with global ambitions chose to move rather than open without it. Keeping Toxic postponed into August also shows how hard it is to find a clean date in a crowded year.
