Bollywood box office first half 2026: the verdicts

Pinkvilla’s trade verdicts sorted the half into a clear hierarchy. It stressed that its figures are trade estimates rather than certified collections.

  • All-time blockbuster: Dhurandhar: The Revenge
  • Hit: Border 2, Bhooth Bangla and Welcome to the Jungle (expected)
  • Average: The Kerala Story 2: Goes Beyond, Mardaani 3 and Main Vaapas Aaunga, which could still become a hit
  • Misses: Ikkis, O’Romeo, Ek Din, Pati Patni Aur Woh Do, Chand Mera Dil, Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai and Cocktail 2

Pinkvilla left Krishnavtaram: Part One out of its classification because of its high production cost, though it said the film performed well. The Free Press Journal’s half-year report took a harsher view, putting it at ₹39.22 crore nett against a reported ₹60 crore budget.

The numbers behind the biggest films

The Free Press Journal’s India nett figures show how far ahead the leader was. Dhurandhar: The Revenge took ₹1,149 crore, Border 2 ₹329.43 crore and Bhooth Bangla ₹182.36 crore.

Worldwide, the gap was just as wide. The Wikipedia list of Hindi films of 2026 puts Dhurandhar: The Revenge at ₹1,852.44 crore, Border 2 at ₹464.50 crore and Bhooth Bangla at ₹247.28 crore.

Lower down, O’Romeo reached ₹72.99 crore nett but was still counted a flop, while The Kerala Story 2 earned a steady ₹52.96 crore. The FPJ also singled out Haunted 3D: Echoes of the Past as a June release that did well.

Further down the Bollywood box office first half 2026 chart, Cocktail 2 grossed ₹143.60 crore worldwide yet still landed among Pinkvilla’s misses, while the multilingual Raja Shivaji, released on 1 May, reached about ₹130 crore. Verdicts depend on budgets as much as grosses.

Not every outlet saw a vintage half. The FPJ described February releases such as Vadh 2, Tu Yaa Main, Assi and Do Deewane Seher Mein as box office disasters, and concluded that January to June “wasn’t great” for Bollywood, naming only four strong performers. Both readings of the Bollywood box office first half 2026 are true: the total was a record, but the success was concentrated in very few titles.

What drove the Bollywood box office first half 2026

One giant. Aditya Dhar’s sequel, led by Ranveer Singh, became the highest-grossing Hindi film ever in India. Without its share, the Bollywood box office first half 2026 total would have fallen well short of 2025. Our look at how Ranveer Singh rules the box office traces the run that led here.

Akshay Kumar delivered twice. He leads both Bhooth Bangla, released on 17 April, and Welcome to the Jungle, released on 26 June, giving him two successes inside six months.

Franchises dominated. Dhurandhar: The Revenge, Border 2, Welcome to the Jungle, Mardaani 3, The Kerala Story 2and Cocktail 2 were all sequels or franchise entries, and they account for most of the half’s biggest numbers. Pinkvilla also noted a steadier release flow than in the post-pandemic years, with fewer dry spells.

Bollywood box office first half 2026 and the Gulf

The record came without one of Hindi cinema’s strongest overseas markets. Border 2, released on 23 January, did not receive clearance in any of the six GCC countries, including the UAE, with reports citing its anti-Pakistan content.

Dhurandhar: The Revenge was banned across the GCC too, as its predecessor had been. Its ₹475.93 crore overseas gross was earned entirely outside the Gulf, so UAE fans could not see two of the half’s three biggest Hindi films in local cinemas.

That makes the Bollywood box office first half 2026 record all the more striking for audiences in the region. The industry set a new high while its usual Gulf audience was largely shut out of the biggest titles.

What came next in the second half

Pinkvilla’s report lined up the slate for July to December:

  • Early July: Alpha and Dhamaal 4, back to back
  • Independence Day weekend: Awarapan 2 and Batwara 1947
  • September: Mirzapur: The Movie and Haiwaan
  • Gandhi Jayanti (2 October): Drishyam 3
  • Year end: Ramayana: Part One and Shah Rukh Khan’s King

Salman Khan’s Matrubhumi was also on the list without a date, delayed from the first half pending approvals. The second half started strongly: Wikipedia’s figures put Dhamaal 4 at ₹224.58 crore and Awarapan 2 at ₹205.05 crore worldwide, both above Welcome to the Jungle.
