DESI DEFENDERS: Must-Watch Indian Superhero movies and shows that pack a punch!

India has a rich history of superheroes, blending mythology, fantasy, and science fiction to create iconic characters. From classic legends to modern cinematic heroes, these figures have captivated audiences for generations. Here’s a look at some of India’s most famous superheroes.

Mr. India

One of Bollywood’s earliest superhero figures, Mr. India is played by Anil Kapoor. A humble man named Arun Verma stumbles upon an invisibility device left behind by his scientist father. Using this newfound power, he fights against the evil Mogambo, an iconic villain played by Amrish Puri. Though lacking superhuman abilities, his intelligence, bravery, and use of technology make him a true superhero.

A Flying Jatt

Tiger Shroff starred as Aman, a reluctant superhero in A Flying Jatt. Bestowed with superpowers after an encounter with a mystical tree, Aman learns to harness his abilities while balancing his fears and responsibilities. The film blends comedy, action, and environmental themes, as the hero takes on the formidable villain Raka, played by Nathan Jones.

Hanu-Man

A recent addition to Indian superhero lore, Hanu-Man is inspired by the mythological deity Hanuman. The film follows an ordinary man, Hanumanthu, who gains divine powers and protects his village from dark forces. With its mythological roots and spectacular visuals, the film has resonated with audiences, signaling a new era for Indian superhero films.

Krrish

A modern Indian superhero, Krrish, played by Hrithik Roshan, is the son of Rohit Mehra (from Koi… Mil Gaya). He inherits superhuman strength, agility, and intelligence from an alien-enhanced lineage. Krrish’s battles against powerful villains, including the evil scientist Dr. Arya and mutant Kaal, cement his place as India’s first full-fledged sci-fi superhero franchise.

Shaktimaan

Arguably India’s most iconic superhero, Shaktimaan, played by Mukesh Khanna, was a TV sensation. He is a divine warrior chosen to rid the world of evil. Possessing extraordinary strength, wisdom, and supernatural abilities, he battles villains like Tamraj Kilvish. His alter-ego, Pandit Gangadhar Vidyadhar Mayadhar Omkarnath Shastri, added a comic touch, making him a beloved figure.

Ajooba

Starring Amitabh Bachchan, Ajooba is a fantasy superhero based on Arabian legends. A masked vigilante, Ajooba fights against evil forces to reclaim his kingdom. With elements of magic, swordplay, and grand action sequences, the film blended folklore with superhero storytelling.

Minnal Murali

India’s first homegrown Malayalam superhero, Minnal Murali, features Tovino Thomas as a tailor struck by lightning, granting him superhuman abilities. The film focuses on his journey from an ordinary man to a hero, with a strong emotional and social depth that makes it stand out among superhero films.
