Audiences experienced a 60 per cent increase in heart rates from 73 bpm to 117 bpm
In a first-of-its-kind experiment, Warner Bros. Pictures joined forces with Samsung in the UAE and KSA to find the region’s biggest horror fan. A total of 72 cinemagoers were invited to screenings of New Line Cinema’s highly anticipated The Nun II in the UAE and KSA, where participants wore cutting-edge Samsung Galaxy watches to measure heart rates during frights and thrills of the latest instalment from The Conjuring Universe.
During the 110-minute screening of The Nun II, the Samsung Watches recorded 60 per cent uplift in heart rates – from 73 bpm to 117 bpm, on average. To accurately record these results all screening guests were decked out with the Samsung Galaxy Watch6 and Galaxy Watch6 Classic that feature a new personalized heart rate zone that analyze individual physical capabilities, and new designs that provide better viewing, even in a dimly lit cinema!
The most heart-pounding moment of the night resulted in the highest heart rate recorded, skyrocketing to an average 149 bpm. Participants described the appearance of Valak The Demon Nun as ‘haunting’ and ‘nightmare fuel’. The ‘bravest’ participants were those with the lowest heart rates. In the UAE, it was Ahmad Jaber, a 28 year old male and in KSA, Ossama Essam, a 25 year old male who had the lowest heart rate across both groups, 52 bpm and 81 bpm, respectively. Awarded the title of ‘Biggest Horror Fan’, “The Nun II movie was amazing, I love The Conjuring universe and the jump scares! But I was able to control myself and stay calm,” said Ahmad Jaber.
The Nun II, is the next chapter in the story of The Nun, the highest-grossing entry in the juggernaut $2 billion The Conjuring Universe, which this year celebrates its tenth anniversary. The film is set in 1956 France, where a priest is murdered… and an evil is spreading.
The sequel to the worldwide smash hit follows Sister Irene as she once again comes face-to-face with Valak, the demon nun. Taissa Farmiga returns as Sister Irene, joined again by Jonas Bloquet as Maurice, along with Storm Reid as Sister Debra, Anna Popplewell as Kate and Bonnie Aarons (reprising her role from The Nun), with an ensemble cast of international talent—Katelyn Rose Downey, Suzanne Bertish, Léontine D’Oncieu, Anouk Darwin Homewood and Gael Raës. Michael Chaves directs, from a screenplay by Ian Goldberg and Richard Naing and Akela Cooper, with a story by Cooper, based on characters created by James Wan and Gary Dauberman.
The Conjuring Universe is the highest-grossing horror franchise in history with $2+ billion worldwide. Globally, four of “The Conjuring” Universe titles have earned more than $300 million worldwide each (“The Nun,” $366 million; “The Conjuring 2,” $322 million; “The Conjuring,” $320 million; “Annabelle: Creation,” $307 million), and all seven have each grossed more than $200 million. “The Nun” is the top-earning film in the franchise, with more than $366 million worldwide.
