SIPS OF HERITAGE: Uncovering the rich traditional Emirati beverages!

UAE is a land rich in culture, heritage, and culinary traditions. While the country is often associated with its breathtaking skylines and luxury, its deep-rooted traditions in food and beverages tell a story of resilience, hospitality, and connection to nature. Emirati beverages, in particular, reflect the region’s history, climate, and social customs, offering a blend of refreshing, aromatic, and nourishing drinks that have been cherished for generations. Let’s take a journey through some of the most beloved traditional Emirati beverages.

Gahwa

A symbol of hospitality and heritage, Gahwa is a spiced Arabic coffee that holds a special place in Emirati culture. Brewed with lightly roasted coffee beans and infused with cardamom, cloves, and saffron, this aromatic beverage is served in small cups called finjans and is often accompanied by dates. In Emirati households, serving Gahwa to guests is a sign of warmth and generosity, making it an integral part of social gatherings and special occasions.

Karak Tea

Inspired by South Asian influences, Karak is a strong and flavorful tea made with black tea leaves, condensed milk, and a mix of spices such as cardamom and cinnamon. This tea is a staple in the UAE, enjoyed by locals as a daily ritual. Originally introduced by traders and laborers from India and Pakistan, Karak has evolved into a national favorite, often enjoyed at roadside tea stalls and cafés across the Emirates.

Jellab

A sweet and refreshing drink, Jellab is made from a combination of grape molasses, rose water, and a hint of smokiness from incense. It is traditionally served with crushed ice and topped with pine nuts and raisins, making it a popular choice during hot summer months and festive gatherings. This drink is particularly favored during Ramadan, as it provides hydration and energy after a day of fasting.

Laban

A nutritious and cooling beverage, Laban is a traditional Emirati drink made from fermented milk, often lightly salted. This refreshing drink is highly valued for its probiotic properties, aiding digestion and replenishing electrolytes in the desert heat. Laban is commonly consumed during meals and is especially favored during Ramadan as a source of nourishment after a long day of fasting.

Tamr Hendi

A tangy and sweet drink, Tamr Hendi is made from tamarind pulp, sugar, and water, often enhanced with a touch of lemon or rose water. This beverage is particularly popular during Ramadan and summer months due to its cooling and thirst-quenching properties. The balance of sweet and sour flavors makes it a favorite among those looking for a revitalizing drink.

Nabeez

A historical beverage, Nabeez is made by soaking dates or raisins in water overnight, resulting in a naturally sweet and nutrient-rich drink. This beverage is known for its health benefits, including improved digestion and hydration. It is traditionally consumed as a natural energy booster, particularly during Ramadan and long fasting periods.

Sahlab

A creamy and comforting beverage, Sahlab is made from a blend of hot milk, sugar, and a special flour derived from orchid tubers, giving it a thick consistency. Often flavored with rose water or orange blossom, and garnished with cinnamon and crushed nuts, Sahlab is a popular winter drink in the UAE, providing warmth and nourishment during cooler months.
