The South film directed by Lijo Jose Pellissery was chosen from among 27 shortlisted films as India’s official entry for the 93rd Academy Awards in the Best International Feature Film category

Lijo Jose Pellissery-directed Malayalam film Jallikattu beat tough competition from films like Deepika Padukone – starrer Chhapaak, Amitabh Bachchan and Ayushmann Khurrana starrer Gulabo Sitabo, Anushka Sharma’s Tripti Dimri starrer Bulbbul, Vidya Balan -starrer Shakuntala Devi, Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Farhan Akhtar – starrer The Sky is Pink, apart from films like Eeb Aalay Ooo, The Disciple, among others to be selected as India’s official entry at the 93rd Academy Awards, 2021 in the Best International Feature Film category.

The film that stars Antony Varghese, Chemban Vinod Jose, Sabumon Abdusamad and Santhy Balachandran is based on a short story ‘Maoist’ written by Hareesh S and explores the relation between humans and nature. The story revolves around the hunt of a buffalo in a small town of Kerala, after it flees from a slaughterhouse. Hareesh also adapted the screenplay for the film with R Jayakumar. The film had garnered rave reviews on its release.

The film will be in the running to win a nomination in the Best International Feature Film category at the Oscars. Last year Zoya Akhtar’s Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt starrer Gully Boy had been chosen as India’s entry for the Oscars, however it did not make the cut to the nominations.
