The Jana Nayagan UAE release finally brought Vijay’s final film to Gulf cinemas on 23 July 2026, six months after a censor battle cost it the Pongal holiday. Here is how it got there, who is in it and how it performed.
The Jana Nayagan UAE release date was Thursday 23 July 2026, the same day the film opened worldwide, including in India. H Vinoth’s political action drama had been due on 9 January, but a long dispute with India’s censor board kept it out of cinemas until it was cleared with an A certificate on 9 July.
It is also the first film Vijay has released since becoming Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. For his huge fan base across Dubai, Sharjah and Abu Dhabi, it was a farewell and a celebration at once.

How the Jana Nayagan UAE release finally happened
The film was submitted to the Central Board of Film Certification on 18 December 2025, but no certificate followed. In January the board referred it to a revising panel over its use of Indian Armed Forces symbols, and KVN Productions took the dispute to the Madras High Court, telling the judges the film had already been cleared in 25 other countries.
The case moved between the High Court and the Supreme Court for weeks, and Pongal came and went. Overseas fans waited too: UK pre-bookings had opened on 17 December 2025, selling more than 12,700 tickets in 24 hours, and the Jana Nayagan UAE release was held back with every other territory. On 9 February the producers withdrew their petition and resubmitted the film to the CBFC’s revising committee, whose screening on 9 March was called off when a member fell ill.
Clearance finally came on 9 July, with an A certificate after some visual changes and muted lines. Gulf News reported that distributors confirmed the Jana Nayagan UAE release before any Indian date was announced. In the end the film opened everywhere on the same day, 23 July.
Vijay’s last film, and his first as Chief Minister
Vijay announced in February 2024 that he would leave acting for politics once his film commitments were done, and Jana Nayagan was billed from the start as his final film. He leads the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam party and took office as Chief Minister about two and a half months before the release. For Gulf fans, the Jana Nayagan UAE release was the last chance to see a new Vijay film on a big screen.
His new office changed the opening credits. According to Gulf News, the familiar “Thalapathy Vijay” title card was replaced with “The Honourable Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, C. Joseph Vijay”, a credit with no obvious precedent for a serving head of a state government.
Jana Nayagan cast and story
Vijay plays Thalapathy Vetri Kondan, a former police officer who raises the daughter of a friend who has died and pushes her towards a career in the Indian Army. His efforts set him against corrupt figures, including an arms dealer whose secret project threatens the country’s democratic institutions.
- Vijay as Vetri Kondan
- Bobby Deol as John Himmler
- Pooja Hegde as Kayal, a journalist
- Mamitha Baiju as Vijayalakshmi, known as Viji
- Prakash Raj, Priyamani, Narain, Gautham Vasudev Menon and Revathi in supporting roles
Look out for directors Lokesh Kanagaraj, Atlee and Nelson Dilipkumar, who make cameo appearances as reporters. Cinematography is by Sathyan Sooryan and editing by Pradeep E Ragav.
A remake of Bhagavanth Kesari
When the trailer arrived in January, viewers spotted strong similarities to the 2023 Telugu hit Bhagavanth Kesari. That film’s producer, Sahu Garapati, later confirmed that Jana Nayagan is a remake, and its director, Anil Ravipudi, receives the story credit.
Vinoth has since described his film as only “50% of Bhagavanth Kesari”, with major changes to suit Vijay’s screen image. The admission contradicted his earlier claims that the story was original.
The music and a stadium audio launch
Anirudh’s soundtrack was the film’s calling card through the delays. T-Series bought the audio rights for a reported ₹35 crore, said to be the highest for a Tamil film, and the singles included “Thalapathy Kacheri”, “Oru Pere Varalaaru” and “Chella Magale”. The last single, “Adiye En Poonthene”, arrived on 17 July, six days before the Jana Nayagan UAE release, with the full album out on 22 July.
The audio launch on 27 December 2025 filled the Bukit Jalil National Stadium in Kuala Lumpur with more than 100,000 people. Our report on the Jana Nayagan audio launch covers Atlee’s emotional speech from the night.
Jana Nayagan box office
According to Variety India, the film earned ₹42.70 crore in India on its first day and ₹80.28 crore worldwide, including ₹30 crore from overseas. That made it the biggest Tamil opener of 2026, far ahead of Suriya’s Karuppu at ₹15.50 crore, and Vijay’s fourth-biggest opening after Leo, Beast and The Greatest of All Time.
The overseas share is where the Jana Nayagan UAE release mattered. Business Today put the overseas total at about ₹71.50 crore after four days and named the Gulf among the markets driving it, alongside North America, Malaysia and Singapore.
The film passed ₹300 crore worldwide on 6 August. Reported final totals range from ₹320 crore to ₹325 crore, according to the film’s Wikipedia entry, enough to make it the highest-grossing Tamil film of 2026.

What the critics said
Reviews were far cooler than the box office. NDTV and Bollywood Hungama gave it 3 out of 5, The Times of India 2.5, and India Today, Hindustan Times and Rediff 2 each, while The Hindu called it a crowd-pleasing masala entertainer.
Critics consistently praised Vijay’s screen presence and Anirudh’s music. The main complaints were weak visual effects, scenes that appeared to use AI-generated imagery and a familiar plot.
Streaming after the Jana Nayagan UAE release
Four weeks after its cinema debut, the film arrived on ZEE5, which began streaming it on 21 August 2026 in Tamil, with Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam dubbed versions. UAE viewers who missed the Jana Nayagan UAE release in cinemas should check the ZEE5 app, as catalogues vary by country.
The road to streaming was rocky too. An earlier Prime Video deal reportedly fell through in March, and footage leaked online in April, leading to three arrests by Tamil Nadu’s Cyber Crime Wing.
