Batwara 1947 is the Partition drama that spent years in production as Lahore 1947, reuniting Sunny Deol with director Rajkumar Santoshi under Aamir Khan’s banner. Here are six things to know about the film, its new title and why it struggled at the box office.

Batwara 1947 opened on 14 August 2026, the eve of India’s Independence Day, with Sunny Deol, Preity Zinta and Shabana Azmi in the lead roles. It tells the story of a Muslim family that moves to Lahore at Partition and finds an elderly Hindu woman still living in the house they have been given.

Reviews were mixed to positive, but audiences chose Awarapan 2 instead. Against a reported budget of ₹150 crore, the film grossed about ₹49 crore worldwide.

1. Batwara 1947 was called Lahore 1947 until June

For most of its life the film was known as Lahore 1947. Sunny Deol revealed the new title with a motion poster on 9 June 2026, two months before release, posting: “In times of hatred and fear, he chose courage.”

No official reason was given. The film’s Wikipedia entry describes the change as an effort to avoid political controversy amid strained India and Pakistan relations, while WION reported, citing Bollywood Hungama, that Aamir Khan did not want the Lahore title.

Batwara means partition or division, so the new name moves the focus from a city across the border to the event itself. The same report said Aamir approached the family of Salim Akhtar, who hold the rights to the title of the 1989 film Batwara.

2. The story comes from a classic play

At Partition, Sikander Mirza and his family leave Meerut for Lahore, where they are allotted a haveli abandoned by its Hindu owners. Inside they find Mai, an elderly Hindu woman who insists the house is her ancestral home and refuses to leave.

The film is based on Jis Lahore Nai Vekhya, O Jamya E Nai, the celebrated 1989 play by Asghar Wajahat, who co-wrote the story and dialogue with Santoshi.

3. Batwara 1947 cast: a strong ensemble

  • Sunny Deol as Sikander Mirza
  • Preity Zinta as Hamida Mirza, his wife
  • Shabana Azmi as Durgavati, known as Mai
  • Karan Deol as Javed Mirza, their son
  • Ali Fazal as Habib Anwar
  • Abhimanyu Singh as Yaqoob Khan

The film also marks Preity Zinta’s return to the big screen after an eight-year break. Speaking to Khaleej Times on release day, Deol rejected comparisons with Gadar, calling Tara Singh and Sikander Mirza “two different kinds of heroes” and adding: “It’s a family film.”

He also recalled the Partition stories his late father, Dharmendra, used to tell. Our report on how Ali Fazal wraps Lahore 1947 covers his time on the shoot.

4. A heavyweight crew behind the camera

A R Rahman composed the songs, with lyrics by Javed Akhtar, and the album includes “Chal Anjaane” and “Kahaan Chale Gaye Ho Ram”. Santosh Sivan shot the film and Resul Pookutty handled the sound design.

It also reunites Deol with Santoshi, his director on Ghayal (1990), Damini (1993) and Ghatak (1996), though in a very different register from those angry dramas. PVR Inox re-released all three in cinemas ahead of the new film.

The censor board passed Batwara 1947 with an A certificate, so it is not a choice for younger viewers despite its family focus.

5. Batwara 1947 took years to reach cinemas

The project was announced in October 2023 as a Deol and Santoshi reunion, and Aamir Khan joined as producer in February 2024, the month filming began. The first schedule ended in August 2024 after a 70-day shoot for Deol, as our report on the Lahore 1947 shoot wrap noted at the time.

After Aamir gave notes on the first cut, a 12-day reshoot began in Punjab on 10 October 2025, and filming wrapped later that month. Planned release dates of 23 January 2025 and 15 June 2025 came and went before the film finally landed on the Independence Day weekend.

6. Batwara 1947 box office: some praise, few tickets

The film opened to ₹5.75 crore in India and ₹8.34 crore worldwide. Up against Awarapan 2, it made ₹28.50 crore net in India in four days, including just ₹2 crore on its first Monday, while Emraan Hashmi’s film reached ₹91 crore.

The final worldwide gross of about ₹49 crore against a ₹150 crore budget made it a box office disaster. By day six The Times of India put its net total at about ₹32 crore and warned the film could lose ₹80 crore.

Reviews told a different story, with 60% positive on Rotten Tomatoes. Filmfare gave it 4 out of 5, DNA and News18 gave 3.5, and NDTV, Bollywood Hungama and Firstpost each gave 3. India Today, Rediff and The Times of India settled on 2.5, and The Indian Express gave 2. Shabana Azmi drew the strongest praise, and several critics noted Deol’s restrained performance.

Batwara 1947 in UAE cinemas

Gulf audiences did get to see it. Khaleej Times reported on release day that the film was playing in cinemas across the UAE. That set it apart from Dhurandhar and Border 2, which were both barred from cinemas across the Gulf.

No streaming date had been confirmed in the sources we checked. UAE viewers who missed the cinema run should check the major streaming apps for its arrival.

Who should watch Batwara 1947

It suits viewers who want a thoughtful Partition story driven by performances rather than spectacle. Fans expecting the roar of Gadar should take Deol at his word: this is a family drama.
