Arijit Singh credits his work in Pagglait to AR Rahman and Pritam’s approach to music that inspired him

Umesh Bist’s dark comedy-drama Pagglait starring Sanya Malhotra received rave reviews from the audience. The film follows the 13-day journey of Sandhya, widowed within five months of being married to her husband Astik.

Sandhya is not a usual young widow. She is your cola drinking, pani puri loving girl who has lost her husband who she is not particularly in love with. Pagglait is also Arijit Singh’s debut as a music composer. Noted lyricist Neelesh Misra has also made his comeback as a lyric writer with this film.

Arijit is thankful that just before the lockdown he collected  his set up and traveled back to his native place. He was emotionally involved in the script and music justified the narrative. In a recent interview Arijit Singh admitted that A.R. Rahman and Pritam’s approach to music helped him understand how to work on the music of Pagglait.

The film has five female singers — Neeti Mohan, Himani Kapoor, Meghna Mishra, Chinmayi Sripada and Jhumpa Mondal “We sent them all the songs, and left it to them to choose which song they wanted to sing. Everybody sang one version of each song… and we loved everything,” he says.

Arjiti has grown up with A.R. Rahman’s music. “I have learnt so much from him in terms of the production of music. My inspiration in taking the step to produce my own music has been A.R. Rahman. Even before I started working with him, I loved Pritamda’s production values and style of composing. I loved his songs,” he adds. Both of them are his  inspirations and their ideas and approach to music really helped Arjiti understand how to work on the music of Pagglait.

Pagglait stars  Sheeba Chaddha, Ashutosh Rana and Sayani Gupta and premiered on Netflix on March 26.
