THEATRE MUSINGS: Sanjeev Dixit’s ‘Sutradhar’ promises to be a theatrical experience fused with music and dance!

Third Half Theatre presents Sanjeev Dixit’s ‘Sutradhar’ inspired by the Mahabharata on February 15th

Step into a world of intrigue, betrayal, and vengeance with Sutradhar, a groundbreaking theatrical production created by Dubai based writer and director Sanjeev Dixit. Inspired by the timeless traditions of Natyashastra, the Greek Classics, and Japanese Noh, Sutradhar seamlessly weaves elements of music, dance, and drama into a spellbinding tale that transcends time and culture.

Set in a kingdom on the brink of collapse, Sutradhar explores the devastating consequences of love and duty sacrificed to the politics of betrayal. As the King prepares to surrender, his daughter’s betrothal becomes a pawn in the terms of peace. When events spiral beyond control, her brother must grapple with the aftermath, navigating a path paved with heartbreak and vengeance.

Derived from the Indian epic Mahabharata, Sutradhar is an English-language play that reimagines classic storytelling for a modern, multicultural audience. The title itself, meaning “the one who holds the strings,” evokes a puppeteer orchestrating the fates of others—or, as the play provocatively asks, “Aren’t we all, at some time, both the puppeteer and the marionette?”

Writer and director Sanjeev Dixit who has completed 20 years with Dubai’s Theatre Community says, “So much has changed over the years, and yet the verve and persistence of Dubai’s theatre enthusiasts continues unblemished. Dubai is such a cultural mosaic and Sutradhar attempts to present an epic story from today’s lens to a diverse audience.”

Don’t miss this extraordinary theatrical journey, where ancient storytelling meets contemporary vision, this Valentine’s in Dubai. The play will be staged on Saturday 15, February at EIS.
