Noted filmmaker Pradeep Sarkar passes away; We revisit to some of his best films

Fondly called dada, Pradeep Sarkar’s death is mourned by the entire industry, and there is an outpouring of grief on social media, as word spreads. To honour his legacy, we look back at his Top 3 films.

A highly notable debut by Vidya Balan, Sarkar’s Parineeta is his ode to Tagore. Parineeta won numerous awards, including the 53rd National award for the Best Debut Film of a Director for Sarkar, and did the rounds of several international film festivals. At the heart of it, this Parineeta is the story of two lovers who overcome misunderstandings and societal pressure to find their way to each other. It stars Saif Ali Khan, Sanjay Dutt, Raima Sen and Dia Mirza.

Although the plot was considered hackneyed, Sarkar brought out the best of its lead actress Rani Mukherji and Konkona Sen Sharma, winning them most multiple award nominations. This film is a classic tale of a daughter’s sacrifice to support her family, with progressive undertones. The film sees Abhishek Bachchan and Mukherji together – who go on to become a great on-screen pair – Jaya Bachchan, Anupam Kher and Kunal Kapoor.

A different premise for Sarkar, Mardani is a hardhitting cop-chase film, with Mukherji at the centre of it as the Crime Branch Senior Inspector of the Mumbai Police. Underlying the chase film is the grim subject of child trafficking, which is rampant in India. The films follows Mukherji as she fights the baddies to rescue the girls, earning several award nominations and wins for its cast and crew.

Clearly, it seems like whatever Sarkar touched, turned into gold! Besides directing Helicopter Eela and Lafangey Parindey, Sarkar has also contributed to Munna Bhai M.B.B.S and Eklavya: The Royal Guard.
