The Border 2 box office run ended at about ₹464.5 crore worldwide, making Sunny Deol’s war sequel one of the biggest Hindi hits of 2026. Here are the numbers, the cast and the five real 1971 battles behind the film.
The Border 2 box office story is a clear success. Anurag Singh’s film opened on 23 January 2026 over the Republic Day weekend and finished as the second-highest-grossing Hindi film of the year, all without a release in several Gulf markets.
Where J P Dutta’s 1997 original focused on a single night at Longewala, the sequel spreads across the 1971 India-Pakistan war on land, in the air and at sea. Each of its stories is drawn from a real engagement.

Border 2 box office: how the run unfolded
The Border 2 box office run opened at ₹30 crore nett on Friday, below the ₹38 crore that Deol’s Gadar 2 managed in 2023, then climbed every day. According to The Hollywood Reporter India, it took ₹36 crore on Saturday, over ₹54 crore on Sunday and ₹59 crore on Republic Day itself.
That gave the Border 2 box office a four-day haul of about ₹180 crore nett in India and over ₹247 crore worldwide. Even so, the Republic Day record stayed with Shah Rukh Khan’s Pathaan, which netted ₹70 crore on the holiday.
The Border 2 box office pace then cooled. The Week reported about ₹3 crore nett on day 15, with the film set to pass ₹290 crore nett in India and ₹400 crore worldwide on day 16. It called the result a “clean SUPERHIT” overall and a “huge BLOCKBUSTER” in the northern circuits.
Border 2 box office: why it skipped Gulf cinemas
The Statesman reported on release day that the film would not open in the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait, Oman or Bahrain over its perceived anti-Pakistan content. The makers had submitted it for approval without success, the same fate that met Ranveer Singh’s Dhurandhar weeks earlier.
For audiences in Dubai and Abu Dhabi, that meant one of the year’s biggest Hindi releases never reached local screens.
The cost was real. The Week estimated that a Gulf release could have added another ₹15 to 20 crore to the Border 2 box office total, and put the overseas run at roughly $6 million.
Border 2 cast and crew
- Sunny Deol as Lt Col Fateh Singh Kaler of the Sikh Regiment
- Varun Dhawan as Maj Hoshiar Singh Dahiya of 3 Grenadiers
- Diljit Dosanjh as Flying Officer Nirmal Jit Singh Sekhon of No. 18 Squadron
- Ahan Shetty as Lt Cdr Mahendra Singh Rawat of the Navy’s 14th Frigate Squadron
- Mona Singh, Sonam Bajwa, Medha Rana and Anya Singh in supporting roles
- Suniel Shetty and Akshaye Khanna in cameos
Deol is the only lead returning from the original. Dutta first pitched a sequel to him in 2015, and the film was formally announced on 13 June 2024, the 27th anniversary of Border.
The soundtrack leans on nostalgia too. The lead single, “Ghar Kab Aaoge”, released on 2 January 2026, is a reworking of the original’s much-loved “Sandese Aate Hai”. Beyond the Border 2 box office numbers, these are the five real battles the film recreates, in the order they happened.
1. Operation Chengiz Khan, the strike that started the war
On the evening of 3 December 1971, the Pakistan Air Force launched pre-emptive strikes on Indian airbases including Amritsar, Pathankot, Srinagar and Agra. The aim was to catch the Indian Air Force on the ground and win air superiority in the west.
It largely failed. Most airfields escaped serious damage, Amritsar’s cratered runway was repaired the same night, and Indira Gandhi treated the strikes as a declaration of war.
2. Manawar Tawi and the fight for Chhamb
Deol’s Fateh is sent to hold Chak Peeran, a vital post across the Mandiala Bridge in the Manawar Tawi region of the Jammu-Chhamb sector. The real Battle of Chhamb ran from 3 to 11 December and ended in a Pakistani victory, which Indian accounts describe as a serious reverse.
The character is loosely based on Brigadier Hardev Singh Kler, although Kler himself won his Maha Vir Chakra on the eastern front, leading the 95 Mountain Brigade’s advance towards Dhaka.
3. The sinking of INS Khukri
On 9 December 1971, the Pakistani submarine Hangor torpedoed the frigate INS Khukri off Diu, Gujarat. Eighteen officers and 176 sailors died, and she remains the only warship the Indian Navy has lost in combat.
Her captain, Mahendra Nath Mulla, chose to go down with his ship and was awarded the Maha Vir Chakra after his death. Ahan Shetty’s Mahendra makes the same choice on screen.
4. Flying Officer Sekhon and the defence of Srinagar
On 14 December, six Pakistani F-86 Sabres attacked Srinagar airfield. Nirmal Jit Singh Sekhon, on readiness duty in his Folland Gnat, took off under fire, hit one Sabre and damaged another before he was shot down. He was 26.
He was awarded the Param Vir Chakra after his death and remains the only member of the Indian Air Force to receive it, a story Diljit Dosanjh plays through to its tragic end.
5. The Battle of Basantar and Major Hoshiar Singh
Basantar, in the Shakargarh sector, was a major tank battle that ended in an Indian victory. Between 15 and 17 December, Major Hoshiar Singh led his 3 Grenadiers company through heavy fire to capture the fortified position at Jarpal, then beat back three counter-attacks.
Badly wounded, he refused evacuation until the ceasefire and received the Param Vir Chakra. Basantar produced two of the war’s highest honours, the other going to Second Lieutenant Arun Khetarpal, whose story is told in Ikkis.
What critics said about Border 2
Reviews were mostly positive. Taran Adarsh gave it 4.5 out of 5 and called it a “thunderous, emotionally charged war epic”, and Bollywood Hungama and DNA matched that score.
Filmfare’s Devesh Sharma was cooler at 3.5, writing that the film “works best as a tribute, not a reinvention”. Hindustan Times and Rediff also gave 3.5, while The Times of India, The Indian Express and NDTV settled on 3.
Where to watch Border 2
On top of the Border 2 box office takings, Netflix paid a reported ₹225 crore for the digital rights and began streaming the film on 20 March 2026. Because Border 2 was kept out of several Gulf cinemas, viewers in the UAE should check the Netflix app to see whether it is available in their region.
